I am Shirin Biswas and I build creative things. I love fixing problems, helping someone, making a place or a person’s life better.

Let me back up a bit.

 

19th October 1998, one of the happiest days of my life. I had been constantly pestering my parents to buy me an electronic toy train and they finally bought me one. But as it always happens with good things, the toy didn’t last very long. I took it to a repair shop and the support-guy said it can’t be done. I argued that for a geek who repairs televisions and washing machines on a daily basis fixing a silly toy should be a piece of cake! To which he angrily said, and I have never forgotten what he said next, ‘If it is so easy go ahead and do it yourself!’ Well, he said a lot of things, but all I remember is “Do It Yourself”.

And I did it myself, I fixed my toy. A kids gotta do what a kids gotta do right! And I enjoyed it. In fact, I enjoyed it more than actually playing with the properly functioning toy.

I had found my passion and it kept me busy and happy all these years. Fixing problems. And it helps that I am a mechanical engineer! A typical project could be as trivial as fixing a door knob or assembling furniture. Or it could be something bigger or more meaningful, like fixing a water crisis.

In summer 2013 I visited a remote destination, for a quiet and peaceful vacation. Turns out, that place never had a regular drinking water supply. People complained and wrote petitions and what not. You know what I told them? Let’s do it ourselves! I am no speaker, I don’t give life changing advice. I am an engineer, I give life changing solutions, and that’s exactly what I designed for them – their own personal self-sustainable refrigerated drinking water supply.

I was so happy with this project that I turned it in to a start-up and launched a company. When I started working on my start-up I had no idea where to begin. I actually did not even know how to spell entrepreneur. I did not know finance, or marketing, or anything remotely relevant to business development. Yet my company started its production in less than six months of idea formulation. How? I figured it out.

20 years later I am still following my passion; Currently, I am working for an environmental engineering company as a Product Development Engineer. As an entrepreneur with a passion for helping people I continue to use my creativity and knowledge for solving problems. I am actively pursuing new job opportunities and projects, hopefully we can work on it together!
